Halcyon days and the doom of man
“Halcyon and the doom of man” is my oil pastel painting I did two years ago.
“Ewww… What a pathetic piece of creation!”, said the man with a smirk face. The baby turtle didn’t mind the rude man’s words and resumed eating leaves in the jungle. The man felt a sort of happiness after insulting the baby turtle and resumed his job— clearing forest for building a concrete forest. Mother nature pleaded with him to stop but he was apathetic. All he could see was a bright future, a Utopia for himself. Day and night he did his job mercilessly. Neither the tears of the trees nor the fallen nests and broken eggs of birds could change his mind. Everything was a marketing item for him, whether it is dead or living things in the forest. Nature was losing its equilibrium each day because of her narcissistic child.
Years passed by, more and more living beings became extinct. The rude man felt very proud of himself and aimed for more “achievements”. His relentless struggles earned him the power to manipulate nature through giant machines. The power grew to such an extent that even artificial rain could be produced, all thanks to science. The cruelty of man knew no bounds as he started to explore deep sea and arctic regions to quench his greed. Mother nature stood as a mute spectator hoping her child would realize his mistake one day. Unfortunately, the silence of nature encouraged the man to do more heinous sins. He continued his sins and started exploring space as he was getting bored of the earth.
The golden years of the man gradually declined. Despite all his powers, he couldn’t find peace and happiness. He even killed his own kind for gain. Though he could manipulate life on a cellular level, he couldn’t eradicate all diseases. He couldn’t change the deformations of his own mind. The more he gained by evil means, the more he suffered. He started to doubt the power of science because it reached a dead end. His deteriorating body reminded him of the fact that laws of mother nature are immutable. The concrete forest he had built all these years, crumbled in calamities, forming mountains of its remains. His ego shrunk to the size of an atom as he saw the symptoms of mortality.
“I regret not enjoying my life. Oh mother nature, forgive me,” the man fell down to ground. Lying on the ground, he saw the turtle, that he had insulted a long time ago. Tears started to roll through his cheeks as the man saw unmatched bliss in the turtle. The turtle never did anything other than eating and sleeping, still, it was healthy and serene. He discerned the fact that life was not about satisfying greed, but to experience and share happiness. He understood that nature was the Utopia he couldn’t see. He folded his hands as a sign of endless respect to nature and died. Mother nature accepted his body and the soil hugged him tight.
